Humanity + Modernity + Nature = Confusion
CSI hosted a self-curated solo exhibit by Diane Feldpausch Tang in the 3D4D gallery in March of 2022. For the exhibit, Tang used multiple mediums to explore a decline of empathy toward others, the built environment, and the natural environment. The exhibit considered our relationship with these three pillars of our lived experience: humanity, modernity, and nature.

Light Studies / Light Pollution
(Staircase exhibit)
Light Pollution has many affects on nature and humans. Through abstract works, Tang been studying how artificial light affects the flight patterns of moths and insects, blinds birds, and takes away our view of the night sky.
For the Humanity… exhibit, Tang painted each step of the gallery staircase to represent a gradation of the Bortle scale.

For her Street and Homeless series, Tang observes, “the homeless are modern hunters and gathers, shunned by our artificial society. After photographing several people in Chicago, I interpreted the photographs into oil paintings, aiming to capture the human experience and spirit of each individual.”

Detroit Series
Born in Detroit, Tang is intrigued by the mass extent of decay of a once thriving city. She photographs interiors of abandoned buildings in Detroit and works with fused and high-fired glass techniques, which evokes industrialism, to further engage the viewer in the urban ruin and peeling away of beauty, memories and time.
