News from the Education Committee
Wooden Ships Workshop
On September 22nd, Kara Johnson worked with a new organization for CSI called Arts of Life, where she facilitated a workshop with 5 participants on-site, an additional 3 from their homes via Zoom, and 7 more in Chicago at large (also via Zoom). The participants responded to the workshop saying, "It is so beautiful!" "Look at the sky above my boat." "I want mine with the three pieces too!" Kara said, "This was a once in a lifetime opportunity to gain such insight about the work that happens at Arts of Life!" Participants asked, "What are we doing next week?" at the end of the workshop, which leads to a question for CSI members. In contribution to success of CSI's education outreach program:
What ideas do YOU have for a workshop that you would like to lead?
Please reach out to Anthony at anthonyheinzmay@chicagosculpture.org with your ideas.
Thank you to those who have shown interest and keep up the great work!

Nashville Tree Foundation
CSI member and CSI Vice President/Education Committee chair Anthony Heinz May created this tree sculpture as a response to the devastation of ash trees by the Emerald Ash Borer across the country. Anthony was invited, along with a few other CSI members and other artists across North America to transform diseased trees. Anthony was the first to complete a tree sculpture for this project, and his tree is in Nashville's Centennial Park. The Nashville Tree Project is based on CSI's Chicago Tree Project and was created with our help.
Anthony was also interviewed on the local news in Nashville, on Channel 5.

Project Onward celebrates an exciting event! The non-profit studio, a leader in disability arts, is opening a new ceramic studio in October on the fifth floor of the Bridgeport Art Center. Project Onward is seeking talented artists with developmental disabilities or mental illness to participate in the ceramics program. The additional workspace will provide ceramists who have developmental disabilities or mental illness with workspaces and creative tools at no cost. This opportunity is made possible by the generous three-year grant contribution from the Virginia A. Groot Foundation, a non-profit organization that celebrates artists in the field of sculptural and three-dimensional art. If you or someone you know would like more information about the requirements to join the program, please visit our eligibility page and contact: info@projectonward.org

Wood available from the Chicago Park District
Want some wood? The Chicago Park District will be sawing good-sized slabs - 2", 3", 4", 5" - at Big Marsh on October 27 and giving them to interested people for a suggested donation. Whole logs will be available as well. Great old, seasoned woods such as elm, ash, black walnut, and oak. Most of the wood will predominately be Ash, Locust (honey and black) and Elm. possibly a Silver Maple, but not Alder, Aspen, Box Elder, Butternut, Pine or White Willow. If you have a special request, let us know: info@chicagosculpture.org .
Some has been season naturally and summon still green it’s going to require ‘seasoning’. Most of the artist stock we are cutting from formerly seasoned log sections from Jackson Park. Artist can come anytime after 1 on Thursday which is when we will designate cutting for those slabs. They should be prepared to either make a cash or a check donation for the FCEC at that time.
The artist should drive to the south entry of the park. Upon entering take an immediate right turn onto the gravel access road and follow it back to the cutting area about a quarter mile in.
Work Opportunity
Harper College in Palatine has several sculptures that need maintenance. The Gerard Singer ferro-concrete, modular sculpture needs to be sealed as a basic preventive maintenance measure. The sculpture has some deterioration of the surface of the modules. The concrete pad would need to be cleaned/power washed before sealing. The sealer would prevent more deterioration.
The Robert Stackhouse wood sculpture on campus has sustained some wear and tear since a complete restoration in 2016. The deck screws have rusted, especially on the deck itself. Some black spots or fungus have developed on the surface of the painted wood, and some paint is chipping off. The sculpture will need to be treated and repainted and the screws replaced with stainless steel screws.
Please contact Margaret Buchen at mbuchen@harpercollege.edu for more information.
