A miniature park by Anthony Heinz May

Miniature Parks
Summertime is a time of year typically reserved to celebrate nature, the outdoors and our parks, especially in Chicago. Chicago has more parks per capita than any other city in the United States. Using found natural materials alongside a few other additions of artistic media, this workshop will encourage participants to create models of their own parks. Twigs, construction paper-cut leaves, water-based clay, and a secret recipe of ingredients will be used to create miniature park replicas to celebrate importance of our natural worlds.
Crepe paper flowers for Micki LeMieux
Micki LeMieux
Crepe Paper Flowers
Reconstruct nature through beauty of expression using delicate paper compositions. Flowers celebrate life through gradients of color. When given, they offer care and kindness; they hold emotional value. Flowers are reminders of the fragility of nature. They can be easily crushed and once picked, can only last indoors as long as water in vases will allow them. Paper flowers last much longer. They can't be found on e-Bay/Amazon because you made them yourself.
Cooper Wire Trees by Kara James
Kara O. James
Copper Wire Trees
Bend, twist and snip user-friendly gauges of copper wire to create small tree sculptures that can be decorated with beads as leaves. Trees breathe in what we breathe out (CO2) and breathe out what we breathe in (O2). Perhaps the most underrated educational lifeforms on Earth, we can learn so much from trees if we only listened to them more. Copper gives unparalleled conductance in so many of the things we use, allowing for human communication like roots of trees that hold conversations with one another. This symbolism presents and reinforces both old and new ways to look at life. Trees for Peace.
Times and dates for classes are expected to be announced soon. Please check in again soon!
We looking to implement more classes for Fall. Send your ideas to: anthonyheinzmay@chicagosculpture.org

About John Airo’s sculpture, Blind Love, and the fundraising T-Shirt design
Blind Love, 2021 by John Airo
Last year, the Ravenswood Sculpture Garden debuted with the installation of six new works of public art. This spring, three more sculptures will join them along the historic Ravenswood Industrial Corridor. Among the group installed in 2021 is “Blind Love,” a surreal piece by Chicago artist John Airo. Located at Ravenswood and Berteau Avenues, the blue, three-armed, genderless figure has captured the imagination of neighbors and visitors alike. “Blind Love” greets fans daily, is a target for spontaneous art drops by Airo, and has developed an enthusiastic social media following.

About the Ravenswood Sculpture Garden
For over a century, the Ravenswood Industrial Corridor has been home to one of Chicago’s most vibrant and diverse creative communities. Over that time, makers of all kinds- from metalworkers and brewers to painters and carpenters- have laid down roots in Ravenswood. Historic manufacturing buildings that once housed giants of industry have since been reimagined, each now home to countless talented artisans.
Established in 2021 by the Ravenswood Community Council (RCC) and Greater Ravenswood Chamber of Commerce (GRCC), the Ravenswood Sculpture Garden celebrates this rich history of arts and industry. Chicago’s newest public art destination includes 7 sculptures, with 3 more coming in Spring 2022! This new attraction enhances our community’s standing as a destination neighborhood, pays homage to its creative spirit, and drives foot traffic to area businesses. Click here to explore the Sculpture Garden online.
Special thanks for Chicago Sculpture International for their assistance and expertise, and of course to John Airo for his continued support and creativity. See more of his work at www.johnairo.com.
What’s next for the Ravenswood Sculpture Garden?
Two new sculptures are coming to the Garden in 2022! Spring will see the installation of “Seed” by Brandin Hurley near Leland and Ravenswood Ave. Further south at Montrose Ave, Ravenswood-based artists and fabricators Manifold will install “Flight of the Bumble Bee.” Commissioned by the GRCC and RCC in 2019, “Flight” takes design inspiration from the pollinator activity at the adjacent Montrose Metra Community Gardens. The sculpture will also include unique, interactive elements that compliment nearby greening efforts. Details and installation dates coming soon!

The concept of difference between the interior and exterior saturates many aspects of life. From the microscopic to the vastness of space, the notion of inside versus outside has shaped our view and understanding of the world. We create the illusion of separation by viewing the body and mind in contrast to the outside world. We are all part of our living planet. How entwined by the elements we are composed of and the world we live in. 3D4D is calling for artwork by Chicago Sculpture International members that explores these ideas: imaginary or real, ranging from the personal to the scientific point of view.
Exhibition runs from April 22 through May 29
